The natural beauty of the Dinaric Alps offers a dramatic contrast between ancient forests, grassy plateaus and alpine cliffs. Off-road travelers are greeted with world-famous Tara Canyon, Durmitor National Park, Bjelasica and Sinjajevina - largest and highest plateau in the Balkans, at the average altitude of 1700 m. Experience Montenegro with your own off-roader – a fascinating journey packed with scenic nature sights.
Tour description:
Our expedition starts in the town of Pljevlja, where we will refuel and get our supplies. Next we collect some breath-taking views over the Tara Canyo, while driving around Mount Ljubišnja (2238 m). The first day ends in the official camp near the famous Đurđevića Tara Bridge.
We continue to Durmitor National Park. For the next 3-day we embark on a long wilderness experience. This means that we need to refuel and restock accordingly, as our next opportunity to do so will be in Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, on the fifth day of the tour.
For the next 200 km we will drive at the average altitudes of 1500-1800m, and never descend below 1300 m. Our campsites will be as high as 1760 m, so the nights may get chilly, but you will be rewarded – the views here are second to none, and driving on these tracks is pure delight.
After refueling and restocking in Podgorica, we meet at the beautiful wild campsite on Lake Rikavac. The last 15 kilometers leading to the lake are extraordinarily similar to the trails of the Western Alps. We travel further to the south side of the Komovi Mountains and Bjelasica. Bjelasica grass ridge has several spots where it is possible to drive over 2000 m altitude, which is not possible elsewhere in Montenegro.
Next day we explore the trail and views of Bjelasica and camp near an exceptionally beautiful lake at an altitude of almost 1800 m. We take the ridge connection to the north side of the Komovi mountain, before we descend to the small town of Andrijevica for refueling and restocking. We then head to Mokra Mountain, with its rich vegetation and tree line well above 1900m altitude.
Culture:
Optional 3-hour rafting tour on the Tara River (not included in the expedition price). As an alternative to rafting you can explore the scenery around camp which offers plenty of photo opportunities, or zip line across the canyon (three different zip lines are available).
Camping at a local nomad settlement at 1750 m altitude - the opportunity to experience real Montenegrin mountain life, we have the chance to try fresh milk, cheese and other local dishes prepared by the shepherds, as well as try Montenegrin Hill Tribe people`s cheese making methods.
Living conditions:
We arrive at the campsites at 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Depart between 9:00 am - 9:30 am. Three nights we are staying at the official campsites, other nights – in beautiful wild campsite, often near lakes, at altitudes between 1300 and 1800 m, so prepare warm clothes – even in midsummer the nights can be cold at these altitudes. For your comfort, bring folding tables and chairs, cooking utensils, mobile refrigerator (12 V), etc. In Žabljak it will be possible to rent bungalow or hotel (not included in the expedition price).
Driving conditions:
This tour does not require extensive off-roading skills - difficulty level is easy to medium. Most of the time we will be on solid slopes with only occasional mud. At some parts of the route, special care should be taken in order to not damage your vehicle with stones. There are no deep water crossings on the route.
