Western Serbia has a truly impressive landscape with several nature reserves, and an abundance of nature parks. This dynamic, mountainous terrain is home to many deep gorges and beautiful lakes, lush old growth mixed forests and unique ethnic architecture with wooden houses in an area where local people have lived in harmony with nature for centuries.
Discover the untouched beauty of western Serbia: nature, culture and adventure
Between the mountains of western Serbia lie some of the most beautiful and picturesque off-road tracks that will meet the expectations of both passionate travelers looking for a relaxing ride through picturesque landscapes and ambitious off-road drivers looking for excitement and new challenges. At the end of each day a unique place to rest - beautiful small mountain hotels that offer you all the luxury and comfort you expect, no less perfect than hotels in Western Europe.
This tour begins with a section through the Valjevo Mountains, a vast area of (up to 1300m) beautiful and diverse mountains south of Valjevo. First we will cover the most scenic trail between Ravna Gora and Divčibare over a narrow rocky ridge overlooking half of western Serbia before arriving at our magnificent 4* hotel in the tourist resort of Divčibare.
On the second day, a dynamic and varied route awaits us through the rest of the Valjevo Mountains, ending with arrival in Kaluđerske bare, a resort town that is the gateway to the spectacular Tara National Park. Our route is a mix of muddy forest sections with gravel and shorter sections on asphalt roads.
The Tara Mountains are mostly covered by pine forests, with peaks reaching 1500-1700 m. It is surrounded by the breathtaking canyon of the Drina River, which we can see from two spectacular viewpoints. In the middle of the Tara, at an altitude of about 1000 m lies Lake Zaovine, which also offers a beautiful sight with its five parts that go deep into the surrounding valleys covered with dense forest. To the south, the Tara Mountains are connected to Zlatibor (another large and very diverse highland) via the Šargan Pass.
Both Tara and Zlatibor have an extensive network of good quality gravel roads, but once you stray off the main roads it is easy to find some more challenging forest trails. At these altitudes (usually over 1000 m), the beginning of April is the time between winter and spring, so our tour will also be an exploration with alternating fresh green and snowy passages. Constant changes in light ensure that it never gets boring, and the beautiful views will tempt us to spontaneous photo stops.
As we drive over the Zlatibor highlands, our average altitude slowly increases, but we also come to an area where the mountains are quite densely populated and people live in harmony with nature. Thus, we will pass many small hilltop villages with the traditional architecture of wooden houses that western Serbia is especially known for.
Finally, the tour reaches the area of Uvac Lakes and Pešter Uplands surrounded by several of the highest mountain ridges in the region - Zlatar, Jadovnik and Golija. While the attractive peaks of these mountains are inaccessible until mid-May due to snow, we will traverse some very interesting routes through the lower slopes of these mountains, where spring is already awakening in early April, giving us beautiful opportunities to explore the lake scenery with some truly spectacular viewpoints and maybe even meet the griffon vultures up close (the Uvac reserve is home to one of the largest colonies of griffon vultures in Europe).
The final day of the tour traditionally offers a shorter and easier route, leaving enough time to head home early afternoon or direct from our last hotel early morning if that is your preference.
Accommodations
The six hotels featured on this tour are a combination of luxurious, large 4-star hotels that offer everything you would expect from such a place (including wellness and spa facilities), and some small, atmospheric hotels built in the traditional local style, which means no compromises in terms of quality of services and content. We pay special attention to choosing hotels that are deep in nature, away from larger cities, to ensure you contact with untouched nature 24 hours a day.
What else should you know about the tour?
During the tour it is possible to refuel near most hotels (petrol, diesel, LPG), so you don't have to take extra petrol cans with you. All major credit cards (Visa, Master, Maestro, etc.) work in Serbia (both at ATMs and when paying for goods), but it is advisable to take a small amount of cash with you for minor expenses.

Make the most of the blooming spring in May! At this time of the year the higher mountains are still cold and partly covered with snow, but the endless expanses of the low Serbian Carpathians (Northeast Serbia) are already strikingly green and warm – ideal for opening the camping season in a cheerful and energetic way.
Wild camping tour through the unforgettable natural landscape of the Serbian Carpathians
This is a complete chillout tour where we will weave our way through undisturbed wilderness between some of the most beautiful, well-hidden, secret wild campsites of Homolje and Kučaj mountains. We drive our 4x4s over ridges teeming with colorful spring flowers, plunge into misty forests that miraculously emerge before a new natural wonder every time, and we'll have a hard time deciding which campsite is the prettiest - either that one in the deep forest, the one on the banks of rivers and lakes, or the one at picturesque vantage points that offer us an unobstructed view of nature's skyline with wonderful sunsets. Eastern Serbia is full of incredible sights such as natural stone arches, canyons, waterfalls and lakes. Let's treat ourselves to an unforgettable spring trip!
From our meeting point we drive about 30 minutes to our first deep forest campsite where we will set up camp under tall towering beech trees, with plenty of firewood for our campfire and an enjoyable introductory evening well hidden from prying eyes.
Next day we continue along the ridges of the Homolje Mountains in a north-easterly direction. We traverse a whole maze of long-forgotten overgrown forest trails, reach several attractive vantage points and ride along river valleys before settling for the night near the tallest Eastern Serbia stone arches. In the next few days we will visit a beautiful waterfall, as well as the Vratna valley, which is unique for its three natural stone arches on the same river! From there we continue our journey towards the south and reach the lake on Mount Stol. We drive through perhaps the most spectacular 360 degree view in Eastern Serbia surrounded by imposing rocky mountain ridges on all sides.
From there it continues south and finally into the Kučaj Mountains, the largest piece of uninhabited wilderness in Serbia. Of course, this tour cannot miss a camp in Kovej, the most impressive viewpoint over the magnificent Lazar Gorge.
From Kovej we continue in a southerly direction through Kučaj until we reach Lake Vrmdža on the southwest side of the Rtanj Mountains, the highest mountain in the area of the Northern Serbian Carpathians (1565 m). After Vrmdža Lake we will settle in our secret forest hideaway in the middle of one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Serbia.
We will slowly complete our circle through the Serbian Carpathians, tackling the Kučaj Mountains in a west-central direction and visiting all the remaining attractions, condition permitting – the spring of Grza, the ruins of Petrus and the Crnica gorge, the Prskalo waterfall, until we set up camp for the last night in a fairytale forest in the geographic center of Kučaj. Our last half-day takes us to the Beljanica plateau, which is also the highest point we will reach on the tour (1339 m).

Join us on an unforgettable off-road trip through Europe’s last wilderness.
The population density of south-eastern Serbia is four times lower than that of the west of the country. In some areas of the Kucaj Mountains we drive up to 70 kilometers without passing through a single village.
On this tour we do not follow a recurring route, but explore the crème da la crème of Serbia’s 4x4 tracks. The route is adjusted in accordance to weather conditions and the participants. We travel the maze of delightfully demanding tracks that are unique in Europe. Have you ever driven a mountain track above the clouds? There is a good chance you’ll do that in Serbia. Unforgettable off-road in Europe’s last remaining wilderness – adorned with challenging passages and cinematic views from the Kucaj Mountains awaits!
We will occasionally drive paved roads to get to our accommodations. Every night we stay at the typical hotels or guesthouses with comfortable rooms. Several hotels have thermal water pools – a great way to relax after a day of adventures.
